Its a historic night in downtown Winnipeg as the Phoenix Coyotes are in town for at MTS Centre as Paul Maurice makes his Jets head coaching debut. Viewers in the Jets region can watch the game live on TSN Jets at 6:30pm ct/7:30pm et or listen live on TSN 1290 Winnipeg. Maurice, who has NHL head coaching experience in Carolina and Toronto, agreed to take over the team from Claude Noel, who along with assistant coach Perry Pearn, who were relieved of their duties on Sunday. The Jets (19-23-5) Jets seventh in the Central Division with 43 points. They trail the Minnesota Wild by 12 points for the final Western Conference wild card playoff spot. Ondrej Pavelec (11-19-4, 3.14, .898) gets the call in goal looking to end a personal five-game losing streak. Dustin Byfuglien, who played forward in Saturdays 6-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets and will likely again play up on Monday, has one goal and two assists in his last two games. Tonight marks the first of three games between these teams this season. The Coyotes have lost their last two games and four of five entering tonight. Their most recent loss came Saturday at home against the Anaheim Ducks by a score of 5-3. The Coyotes (21-14-9) are fifth in the Pacific Division on 51 points. They are four points behind the Wild for that last wild card berth. Team Canadas Mike Smith (15-11-8, 2.89, .910) will start in goal. Coyotes captain Shane Doan, equipment manager Stan Wilson and vice president of communication Rich Nairn are the remaining three members of the Coyotes organization who were part of the Winnipeg Jets before the move to Phoenix. This will also be the first NHL game in his hometown for Winnipeg native Michael Stone.
.Y. - The New York Rangers have reached a one-year contract extension with goalie Cam Talbot, keeping Henrik Lundqvists backup away from unrestricted free agency.
.Y. -- The New York Islanders were merely content with a lopsided victory.
. It took five games, but the Celtics finally helped Stevens earn his first NBA victory. "Im going to celebrate for a whole 12 minutes, and then Im going to start watching Orlando and trying to figure them out," the first-year Celtics coach said after Boston beat the Utah Jazz, one of the leagues other winless teams, 97-87 on Wednesday night.
. -- The Minnesota Twins have granted relief pitcher Matt Guerrier his unconditional release, making the 35-year-old right-hander a free agent.
. The Brad Jacobs team from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., advanced to Fridays championship game with a 10-6 win over Chinas Rui Liu in the semifinal.ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins placed a franchise tag on three-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Brian Orakpo on Monday, all but ensuring he will remain with the team next season. The Redskins used the non-exclusive tag, worth about $11.5 million for 2014. He remains eligible to become a free agent later this month, but Washington will have the right to match any offer by another team and could receive two first-round draft picks as compensation if he signs elsewhere. The Redskins will continue to work on a long-term deal with the 27-year-old 2009 first-round draft pick, whose play at times has straddled the line between good and elite, therefore making it a challenge to gauge his contract value. He has been most effective as a pass-rusher -- 39 1/2 sacks over five years -- but he has twice torn the pectoral muscle near his left shoulder, leading to questions about his durability. HHis chances of staying with the Redskins were helped when new coach Jay Gruden retained defensive co-ordinator Jim Haslett, who plans to keep the 3-4 scheme that suits Orakpos talents.dddddddddddd The Redskins can offer a generous deal to Orakpo now that their two-year, $36 million NFL-imposed salary-cap penalty has expired. But they have several other impending free agents on defence as well as various holes to fill elsewhere after a 3-13 season. They had previously re-signed cornerback DeAngelo Hall and defensive lineman Chris Baker. The Redskins also agreed to terms with safety Jose Gumbs on Monday for a one-year deal worth $495,000. Gumbs, undrafted out of Monmouth, made his NFL debut with Washington last season, playing in eight games with one interception. Orakpo had 10 sacks and his first career interception last season. He was selected with the No. 13 overall pick.
