After the Angels rallied for a 5 4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night, they may have unearthed a new closer.

Kole Calhoun.

Calhoun made his second game saving ninth inning throw in nine games, with a peg to the plate to throw out the potential tying run. On May 14, he nailed George Springer trying to go to second, converting a double play that helped save a victory over the Houston Astros.

“It feels good
,” Calhoun said. “You want to be in those spots. You want the ball hit to you in those situations.”

Calhoun’s big moment was crucial to the Angels, and also for him personally. He’s endured a season that has now seen his batting average drop to .154, and his spot in the lineup to ninth for the first time since 2014.

To his offensive troubles, he added a baserunning mistake that scuttled a rally for a team that had been struggling to put any offense together.

In the sixth, the Angels had a potential run wiped off the board because Calhoun made an ill advised attempt to take third on a single to left, and he was tagged out before the run scored. He had earlier left the bases loaded, just getting under a fly ball to deep right field.

Fortunately for Calhoun, the Angels bailed him out in the ninth, with a stirring comeback against Blue Jays closer Tyler Clippard.

Mike Trout, Justin Upton and Albert Pujols all drew one out walks, and then Shohei Ohtani tied the game with a broken bat single into center
, the biggest late inning hit of his young big league career. Andrelton Simmons followed with a two run single through a drawn in infield, which put the Angels up 5 3 and took Calhoun off the hook.
Blake Parker came to the mound to try to close it in the ninth. He began the season as the Angels closer, and the merry go round of failed and injured relievers had come back around to him.

Parker gave up a single to pinch hitter Dwight Smith Jr. and then Curtis Granderson hit a sinking line drive into right.

With the game coming back to Calhoun, he made another questionable decision. He dove for the ball
, and it skipped past him to the wall.
“That’s a tough one right there,” Calhoun said. “I run that back in my mind. … If I go straight to that ball, it bounces and hits over my head. I either have to go to the wall or come in and get it and my first step told me to come in and get it. Once I knew I couldn’t get to it I tried to knock it down. It got by me. That’s really not what you want to happen. It’s one of those balls that is right in between. You just trust your instincts, and that wasn’t so good.”
Kendrys Morales then blasted a ball off the center field fence, but the Blue Jays only scored one run because the runners were tagging. With runners at the corners and no outs
, the Angels were still clinging to a 5 4 lead.

Standing in right field, Calhoun could have been thinking of all that had gone wrong for him on this day, or this season. Instead, he was picturing what he needed to do. He was imagining a fly ball to him, one that he could catch as his momentum was carrying him toward the plate.

“You visualize it before it happens,” Calhoun said, “and everything went perfectly.”

Calhoun caught Teoscar Hernandez’s fly ball and uncorked a throw to the plate on the fly. Martín Maldonado slapped the tag on Granderson, and the Angels had the second out, still with the lead.
“It was a little high,” Simmons deadpanned. “I was expecting it more on a line, but I guess I’ll take it. I’ve got high expectations for every time he throws the ball. There’s nobody else you want that ball going to in the outfield.”

Added Manager Mike Scioscia “That’s a rocket. That’s not shallow right field. That’s medium deep right field. There aren’t many right fielders who are able to throw out a guy like Granderson, but he put it right on the money.”

After that, the Angels intentionally walked Josh Donaldson, and Parker struck out Justin Smoak, finishing off an emotional victory.

“We definitely had to grind for this one,” said Simmons, who also made a fantastic diving catch in the seventh. “We made a couple mistakes. We kept coming at them. The last inning, everybody put up good at bats and we played solid defense to get the W. It was a big win. We needed that. Hopefully, we can keep it going.”
